Whether you blog as a hobby, or as a way to make money, you want peoples’ eyeballs on your blog. The best way to achieve that goal is to blog about things that no one else is discussing. It seems as if almost every blogger jumps on the bandwagon when either Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears does something people feel is outrageous, but the problem is that the market gets saturated. So many people are discussing the story that many bloggers get lost in the shuffle.

Don’t be one of the ones who are left in the dust. Find your niche, and go for it. If you’re into politics, you may find it beneficial to discuss local or regional political matters. You may be in an area where there aren’t many bloggers, and if there are, they may not be discussing politics. That makes the market yours, or pretty much yours. If a local lawmaker is making news, but bloggers aren’t discussing him or her, then you’re that much more likely to attract visitors when your blog posts hit the search engines.

Of course, politics is only one area where you could try to find your niche. You could discuss hobbies such as photography, quilting, or music.

Let the Perez Hiltons of the world rip young entertainers like Lohan and Spears to shreds. Let bloggers follow in his footsteps and try to cash in. You, however, have the opportunity to find a unique topic and own it.

Seize the opportunity by finding something that appeals to you, and isn’t being discussed ad nauseum.

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of blogging is spam. Spammers see blogs, and they see an open market. Or so they think.

Your Hostablog blog runs WordPress, which means that you have powerful means by which to prevent spam from reaching your readers. After all, why should you let a company advertise their wares when they won’t even pay you for it? We already have powerful spam tools at work, all of which help reduce the amount of spam that makes it to your blog.

You have tools, too. In the “Discussion” portion of your “Settings” section, you’re able to filter out certain words, and you can decide whether or not you want blog posts moderated. As if that’s not enough, you can even choose the level of moderation that you want, allowing comments to go through unfiltered after an initial post, if that’s what you want. All of these things play a part in stopping spam from reaching its intended destination.

You may not want to moderate your posts, and that’s fine. The spam tools that we have in place are already hard at work fighting the good fight against those annoying advertisements that make somebody money, but not you. And let’s face it, much of the things that are advertised in spam are not likely to be the sort of material you’d like mentioned on your blog.

Of course, as the tools get smarter, so too do the spammers. Just know that we at Hostablog will do everything in our power to make sure that as little spam as possible makes it to your blog.

If you’ve found our website, but don’t use the Internet often, you may be wondering why someone would want to have a blog. Isn’t that just for political pundits, or folks who live in their parents’ basements? The answer would be “no.”

You don’t have to be a computer expert to have a blog. Now, why would you want to have a blog in the first place? Here are a few reasons:

You can share your opinions, and by using “tags,” or special keywords, you can attract traffic from like-minded people.

You can easily connect with friends, family, and colleagues, sharing opinions ranging from the mundane to complex. It’s your blog, so use it how you see fit.

There’s no reason to pay for a blog; you can have one for free right here at Hostablog.

Really, it doesn’t matter if you use the Internet once a week, or all day everyday. A blog can be an outlet for creative writing, or it can be an outlet for you to share your opinions about current events, politics, or anything you want.

That’s the beautiful thing about blogs. Everyone can have one, and everyone can use theirs to talk about whatever they wish.

The nicest thing you can do for someone in the blogosphere is link to their blog. When someone links to your blog, the nice thing to do is link back. Now, you can do this by mentioning the specific site in a blog post, or ou can add the site to your blogroll, which you’ll find under your “Links” section.

A blogroll is simply a list of blogs that your visitors can see on a sidebar. The exact location varies from theme to theme. When you have a list of sites in your blogroll, you’re saying that these are sites you recommend, and it’s a high compliment to place someone on your list, just as it’s a compliment for someone to place you on their blogroll.

On the Internet, it’s all about connections and word of mouth. Sharing links and blogrolls is the best way for everyone to enjoy a few more hits to their blog, and at the same time, that’ll provide users with access to blogs that they may not have found before.

Here at Hostablog, we want you to get the best experience that you can out of blogging. We want you to express yourself, and have fun with it. We do, however, have a few reasonable rules that are put in place to protect the interests of all of the bloggers who use our service.

Some of the rules are obvious: don’t spam. Don’t post copyrighted or trademarked materials. Make sure to read through the terms, though, so you know what you can and cannot do. As long as you don’t post hate material, pretend to be someone else or represent a company that you don’t, and don’t post malicious material (spam, viruses, etc.), you’ll basically be okay.

We recognize that blogging is how people express themselves, and with that comes the issue of free speech. However, with free speech comes great responsibility. Just like your right to swing your fist ends where someone else’s nose begins, your right to post what you want ends where someone else’s rights begin.

We absolutely want you to enjoy your blogging experience here at Hostablog. All we ask is that you follow our few reasonable rules.

If you want to write a post now, but you don’t want to post it right away, that’s no problem. Suppose you’re going away for the weekend, and you want to write posts in advance, spacing them out throughout the weekend. That is also not a problem.

WordPress makes it quite easy to make a timed entry. You simply write the post as usual, but instead of pressing the “Publish” button, you simply hit the “Edit” button next to “Publish immediately.”

You will then be presented with the ability to select the date and time that you wish your post to go “live.” You then click “OK,” and instead of “Publish,” you will click on “Schedule.”

Once you do that, your post will be saved, and it will be scheduled to post at the date and time that you indicated. Simple and handy.

There are many uses for this feature, most notably the ability to space your posts throughout a given time period, to make it seem as if you’re posting regularly, even if you’re on the beach somewhere, enjoying a well-deserved vacation.

At some point, you may find your blog so popular that companies approach you to endorse or recommend their products or services. This is all well and good, but if you’re based in the United States, there are some rules you have to follow, thanks to the Federal Trade Commission.

Essentially, you have to give full disclosure if you were paid for your endorsement in any way, or given free products or services. An example of this would be if you gave the iPad a glowing review, but were given a free iPad in return, you would be mandated to disclose that fact.

The disclosure requirement can be met by making a brief disclaimer style notice at the end of the post, so long that it is placed prominently within the post.

The FTC made the move in response to the large number of bloggers who were enjoying free products but who were also failing to mention that fact. The probable logic is that the FTC wants consumers to make an informed decision, and part of being informed is knowing whether or not the blogger who wrote the review was given money or payment in kind.

To the average blogger, this doesn’t mean much, but if you do review a product and you were paid for that review in some manner, all you have to do is be honest and say so.

If you’re new to the world of blogging, you may be short on ideas as to what to blog about. You can blog about anything, really. Did you run across a news story you have an opinion about? Share that opinion in a blog post! Do you want to share something exciting that’s going on in your life? Write about it on your blog!

You can blog about pretty much anything you want, because the fact of the matter is that it’s your blog, and you run the show. Talk about politics, current events, share a joke, or just write about anything.

You’re sure to find visitors who agree with your views, or at the very least who enjoy reading your writing. If they enjoy your writing, they’re likely to come back, and you’ve got yourself regular readers!

You can post as little or as often as you like, but remember: if you go a long while without posting, you’re likely to lose your regular visitors, so try to post at least twice a week. Or not. It’s your blog!

This feature comes in handy if you want to make a few posts that aren’t meant for the world at large to read, and all you have to do is pass the password along to those who you want to read it.

You may even consider using the same password for all of your password protected posts, so that friends and family can easily access them.
